Other experts agree. It appears as though Dindim recognizes his rescuer as he would another penguin. In other words, it’s as if Mr. de Souza has become part of the penguin’s family.

Most Magellanic penguins are extremely loyal to their partner and nesting site. They nest in the same place every year and with the same partner.

“I love the penguin like it’s my own child and I believe the penguin loves me,” Pereira de Souza said.

“No one else is allowed to touch him. He pecks them if they do. He lays on my lap, lets me give him showers, and allows me to feed him sardines and to pick him up.”

Biologist João Paulo Krajewski once witnessed Dindim ‘cleaning’ Mr. de Souza’s face with his beak.

“This shows how close they are and how comfortable Dindim is around Mr. João,” he said.

“The penguin is completely free,” Krajewski said. “It sleeps in Mr. João’s backyard, which is connected to the beach and only partially fenced, since João is concerned about street dogs attacking the penguin.”

“Dindim definitely knows where he is going when he arrives at Ilha Grande, since for several consecutive years he goes, by himself, to the very same spot in Mr. João’s backyard.”
