Sophia has recently completed her potty training, so her parents told her she could pick out a special “prize”. The little girl went for a new doll. When the cashier questioned her choice of a black doll, Sophia shut her down with a brilliant response.

Sophia’s mother – Brandi Benner, from South Carolina – said that they were paying for the doll in a Target store when the cashier asked if they were going to a birthday party.

“We both gave her a blank stare,” Mrs. Benner said.

The cashier insisted, pointed to the doll and asked Sophia if she picked it out for a friend.

Mrs. Benner then explained to her that the doll was a prize for Sophia being fully potty trained.

“The woman gave me a puzzled look and turned to Sophia and asked, ‘Are you sure this is the doll you want, honey?'” Mrs. Benner recalled.

“Yes, please,” Sophia replied promptly.

Sophia’s answer was apparently not good enough for the cashier. She insisted yet again, trying to convince the little girl that she should pick out a doll that looked more like her.

“But she doesn’t look like you. We have lots of other dolls that look more like you.”

This time, Sophia had the perfect response:

“Yes, she does. She’s a doctor like I’m a doctor. And I’m a pretty girl and she’s a pretty girl. See her pretty hair? And see her stethoscope?”

“Oh, that’s nice,” the cashier replied.

The episode convinced Mrs. Benner once again that “we aren’t born with the idea that color matters”.

“Skin comes in different colors just like hair and eyes and every shade is beautiful,” the young mother-of-two said.
