Coach shuts down reporter who asked him why he let a player attend his child’s birth during semifinals

When a reporter questioned his choice of allowing a player to attend his child’s birth in the middle of the playoffs, this basketball coach shut him down with a brilliant response.

The birth of a basketball player’s first child occurred in the middle of his team’s playoffs.

The decision of whether or not Augusto Lima – Žalgiris Kaunas star player – should miss the semifinals in order to attend his daughter’s birth was left to the team’s head coach, Šarūnas “Šaras” Jasikevičius, a former professional basketball player and EuroLeague Basketball Legend.

Coach Jasikevičius, a father of two, allowed Lima to attend the birth of his first child.

Although the team still won the encounter with a 2-1 lead, a reporter asked Jasikevičius about Lima’s absence during the press conference.

The coach shut him down with a brilliant response, defending his player and schooling the reporter about family values.

Here’s the full transcript of the exchange:

Reporter: “Coach, what do you think about Augusto Lima going away in the midst of a series to attend the birth of his child?”

Jasikevičius: “What do I think about it? I allowed him to go.”

Reporter: “But is it normal for a player to leave the team during the semifinals?”

Jasikevičius: “Do you have kids? When you have kids, you’ll understand. Because that’s the height of human experience. Wow, that’s a good question, really! Do you think basketball is the most important thing in life?”

Reporter: “No, but a semifinal is important.”

Jasikevičius: “To whom is it important?”

Reporter: “The team.”

Jasikevičius: “Which one?”

Reporter: “Žalgiris.”

Jasikevičius: “Did you see the number of fans at the game? Important? When you see your first child, you will understand what the most important thing in life is. Because nothing can be more majestic in the world than the birth of a child. Not titles, not anything else. Augusto Lima is now in heaven, emotionally. I’m really happy for him!”

Augusto Lima took to Istagram to introduce his first-born daughter, Alba, and thank Jasikevičius.

“Thank you for letting me experience the feeling of being a father. It’s an indescribable feeling. It is undoubtedly the best gift of my life,” he wrote in Spanish.

The Brazilian player also thanked his coach on Twitter: “There are a lot of different people and different coaches, but this man is so great, both on and off the court. Thanks, coach.”
