Florida firefighters surprised an expecting mother with keys to a new home and a heartwarming baby shower after she lost everything in a disastrous fire.

The fire broke out in the living room of Nicola Taylor’s fourth floor apartment in Lauderhill, Florida. The young expecting mother, who is due May 5, woke up to the smell of smoke.

Taylor shares the apartment with her father, cousin, and her cousin’s two-year-old son. They all managed to flee the apartment unharmed.

Lauderhill firefighters arrived at the scene and put out the flames in 45 minutes.

Two days before the unfortunate incident, Taylor’s family and friends threw her a surprise baby shower. All the gifts she received were sadly destroyed in the fire.

Taylor’s story made an impression on all the firefighters at the Lauderhill Fire Department – even those who weren’t even involved in putting out the fire.

“They heard the story, they saw the condition of the apartment and their hearts were broken. They’re people just like everybody else, and their hearts were broken with this story. She’s eight months pregnant and lost everything in a baby shower just recently, and they wanted to do something,” Lauderhill Fire Captain Jerry González said.

“They were seeing a whole bunch of burned up baby items and it was very emotional for the guys, being parents themselves, it hit home. They were compelled to do something. Something touched us about this family,” he added.

“Having a family myself, I have two young kids and going through that whole process of having a baby shower, having the babies, it hit home,” B.J. Smith, a Lauderhill firefighter, said.

González put together a GoFundMe page to help Taylor and her family start anew.

A couple of days later, Nicola Taylor received an invitation from the Lauderhill Fire Department. She was supposed to drop by and pick up some donations made by the community.

When she walked in, she was surprised with a heartwarming baby shower. She received just about everything she could possibly need and wish for, from baby clothes to baby carriers, gifts and gift cards, and even a Tiffany necklace.

“God is amazing,” mom-to-be Nicola Taylor said. “This is more stuff than I had. Thank you.”

But the big-hearted firefighters saved the best gift for last.

“The members of the fire department and the community have donated. We were able to get you a new lease, a new apartment,” González said as he handed Taylor the keys to her new apartment. “We’ve covered your deposit and a few months’ rent.”

The mom-to-be was deeply touched by the kind gesture and said she will be sharing the story with the baby – a girl – when she gets older.

“There’s no words to describe it,” the young mom-to-be said. “My dad, he cried. That explains it all. I never see my dad in tears. I would like to tell the fire department, ‘Thank you.’ I would like to say [to] everybody who donated, ‘Thank you, and thanks for the well wishes.'”

“It’s so overwhelming,” Taylor’s father, Glenton Daley, said. “I don’t know how to thank them. I was worried, it was painful and unbearable and these angels came along and stood by me. I’m so thankful.”
