A couple’s flight was just about to take off when they were told that their grandson was in intensive care. The pilot didn’t think twice about it. He turned the plane around so that the two could say goodbye to their dying grandson.

Becky Stephenson, a travel agent from Bradford, UK, said two of her customers who did not wish to be named were about to set off for Australia when they got the awful news that their grandson was in serious condition.

The pair had already boarded their Etihad Airways flight and were just about to switch off their phones when they noticed a couple of missed calls from their son-in-law.

“They were taxiing on the runway when they got the text message saying their grandson was in intensive care and they needed to get there,” Stephenson said.

“They passed the message to the crew, who spoke to the captain and he turned the plane back.”

The pilot returned the plane to the boarding gate at the Manchester Airport immediately.

From the Etihad Airways crew to the airport staff – everyone jumped in to help the pair collect their luggage and get straight to the hospital.

Sadly, the couple’s grandson died the following day.

According to Stephenson, the two were extremely grateful to have been given the chance to see their grandson for the last time and say their goodbyes.

“They are so happy,” Stephenson added. “They never in a million years expected the crew to go so far for them.”

“You shudder to think what would have happened if they hadn’t been able to get off the plane.”

On top of everything else, Etihad Airways are reportedly giving the couple permission to re-use their tickets for a future trip to Australia.
